I made this drawing after many visits to an array of beautiful country houses and gardens around Ireland and Britain. Im always happy to step into the shoes of the people who used to live there and imagine what it must have been like. The teams of people who were employed to look after these historic gardens is in many cases mind blowing. Topiary trees were a favourite of gardeners in the past especially the victorians who favoured the architectural and structural qualities of clipped box hedging. It was a fitting background for them to showcase the exotic plants that were arriving into Britain and further afield. They still appeal to the modern gardener for this very reason.
